There are a lot of things people look for when they’re seeking a great place to retire, but there are a few criteria that are always at the top of the list. Popular factors like weather, affordability, safety, access to destination cities, and city that offers plenty of things to do. With these things in mind, let’s take a look at some of the most popular places to retire in 2020.
Orlando, FL
Florida has always been a popular destination city for retirees, as well as snowbirds that want to get away from cold weather and spend their winters in a warmer climate. Part of the appeal is affordability, at least in terms of a state that has nice weather and access to the ocean. The cost of living in Orlando is below the national average and still boasts plenty of things to do, from arts to culture to outdoor activities. Another benefit of retiring in Orlando is that there are plenty of other cities in Florida that can be visited for a day trip or a weekend getaway.
Scottsdale, AZ
Arizona is another state that is frequently at the top of lists about the best places to retire. Much like Orlando, Scottsdale offers a lot of activities for seniors (and anyone else for that matter) that make it a desirable place to live. In terms of cost of living, Scottsdale is not as inexpensive as Orlando and, in fact, is noticeably more expensive than the national average. Like Florida, Arizona has many popular cities clustered near each other, as well as access to popular destinations like Las Vegas, Dallas, Los Angeles and San Diego. If you’re looking for a cheaper way to retire near the West Coast that still makes it easy to visit other parts of the country, Scottsdale is a place to look in to.
Denver, CO
Denver is probably the most expensive place to retire on this list, but it’s for good reason. While you’ll have to deal with some snow and colder weather, Denver is a city with a lot going on and plenty of entertainment, regardless of your age. Beyond that, it’s so centrally located that you can literally visit any corner of the U.S. without dealing with cross country flights or days upon days of driving. One thing about Denver that is different than some of the other cities mentioned here is that it does have a large population of young professionals since it’s such a nice place to live without having to sacrifice a huge part of your income to live in one of America’s best big cities.
Cincinnati, OH
Cincinnati offers a lot of what retirees look for in a great place to live. It’s affordable, has great hospitals, beautiful parks and a recently revitalized downtown area. As one of the bigger cities in the U.S., there’s no shortage of things to do either, from professional sporting events to concerts and community events, there’s plenty to like. If you like being outdoors and enjoying nature, there’s few better places to retire than Cincinnati.
