What kinds of paperwork do I need for auto transport?

Many people choose a random company at the last minute to ship their cars with an auto transport company. Some people may not have time to research different companies and may need one to deliver their cars on the spot.

However, it is much recommended to do the research and prepare everything beforehand, so that the process is carried out much faster and the customer has all the necessary paperwork ready.

This guide will help you prepare your vehicle for the most convenient and fastest shipping process possible.

Necessary Documents

There are many documents that are involved for auto transport, but the most important ones are always needed in a transport process: the bill of lading, vehicle registration, and insurance terms.

Bill of lading

The auto transport bill of lading is very important because this shows that your vehicle was delivered and contains information about your car's condition at drop off and pickup.

The bill of lading should also include any proof of damages during transport, so that the insurance companies can pay for repairs.

Insurance terms

The insurance terms is also a very important document for transport, because this is what the auto transport carrier  carries to ship the customer's vehicle.

The insurance includes information about the type of insurance that the customer's car has, and what is specifically covered under the insurance.

Vehicle registration

The vehicle registration is very important also because the transport company needs to know if the car is registered to the customer. The customer has to prove that the vehicle is theirs and they have the right to ship it.

Other documents are sometimes needed but not always necessary. These include the lienholder authorization, absent owner authorization, title and registration, proof of insurance, and photo identification.

Lienholder authorization

The lienholder authorization is an authorization that is required for the financial institution, if you are paying off your loans for your vehicle that is to be shipped.

If the vehicle will be shipped via boat, the lienholder authorization is needed to ship the car. This method is usually for people shipping their cars to Hawaii.

Absent owner authorization

The absent owner authorization is paperwork that the customer needs if the car is going through a seaport. If someone other than the vehicle owner is picking up the car, the absent owner authorization form is needed.
