Hurricane season usually takes place around August and September, and 2020 Atlantic hurricane season is no different. The season is projected to produce 13 tropical hurricanes before September, and this will affect many states such as Louisiana and South Carolina. Hurricanes often make transport extremely difficult, with flooding, severe winds, damages, and delays.
Storm Laura will turn into a Category 2 and be severe on Louisiana as it travels down to the Caribbeans. The horrifying hurricanes Harvey and Irma that occurred during hurricane season in 2017, deeply impacted transport companies and carriers that were traveling to and from Texas and Florida.
Auto transport carriers were forced to stop in rescue areas during Hurricane Harvey and Irma, and rescue boats were even sent out to help people out of the areas. Since 300 roads were closed at the time, transport drivers could not get anywhere and had to wait anxiously for help.
In times of natural disasters such as these, the auto transport companies need to be prepared for severe weather and should regularly train the carriers on what to do during a disaster emergency. The Jetco shipping carriers that were traveling through Texas during Harvey said they were prepared with a disaster response plan, and were helping the community move 40 boats through the storm.
There are some helpful ways the carriers can be prepared for severe weather conditions:
Knowing about the weather conditions beforehand
Weather reports are usually accurate and are updated to show you the weather even a week before traveling. Searching for the weather through the routes the carrier will take will be extremely helpful during hurricane season.
Since hurricanes can be predicted and the reports will tell you how bad the weather will be, the transport carriers should plan accordingly. Customers should be notified of delays due to bad weather. Floods are also not predictable, so the carriers need to be careful and avoid areas that are heavily flooded or bombarded by a storm.
If the hurricane turns into a blizzard, or it is announced that the hurricane will turn into a 3 or a 4, it is best to not transport vehicles at all. In order to stay safe, the transport companies should not transport vehicles during extreme weather conditions.
Enclosed transport
Because hurricanes will definitely make objects fly into the air, there is a high chance of damage for the cars that the transport carriers are shipping. The car may become scratched, dented, or damaged by rocks, branches, and rainfall.
The customer should be advised to order enclosed transport, because this type of service will provide a safe covering for the car. The car will be much less prone to damage, because it will be secured inside a truck.
Insurance
The customers should inquire the transport companies about insurance and what will be covered for their cars. Sometimes, the insurance will not cover additional damages such as windshield or theft, so make sure to add windshield insurance if the car will be delivered through a hurricane or a storm.
Asking about the insurance plans will be very beneficial to the customer, and will give them a peace of mind when shipping their cars.
