Common problems that occur during auto transport

Whether you are moving to another state in the hot, blistering summer or need a car delivered to your school on the other side of the country, you want your vehicle transported in the easiest, most trouble-free way possible.

There may be some problems that arise if you are trying to ship your car at the last minute, or because of unforeseen circumstances.

Here are some common problems that occur during vehicle transport, and some tips to prepare for in order avoid trouble.

1. Transport delays

The most common problem that occurs during auto transport is car shipping delays. The carriers work really hard to keep time commitments and have the car delivered on time, but delays still occur either because of paperwork, traffic, high demand, seasonal changes, and bad weather.

Because of delays, the auto transport companies will usually NOT inform the customers about the exact time and date the vehicle will be transported. If the company tries to give you an exact date and time, you should be cautious. The car shippers will let you know the estimated date in a three day window, and if the car happens to be delayed, the date will be changed.

2. Customer service

Sometimes, the customer service department can be hard to reach for some auto transport companies. Some smaller companies may not have a customer service department, and it can be hard to reach the carrier if there is a problem or the car shipping is delayed.

If you hired a car transport carrier through a third party or a broker, it may be hard to reach out to the hauler if something happens. There can be a misunderstanding when the third party tries to reach out to both the carrier and the customer.

In order to prevent such cases from happening, make sure to get a contact number from the carrier, and not just the broker/third party. This will let you get into contact with the company if something goes wrong during transport.

3. Damage

Sometimes, damages can occur to your vehicle on the road due to accidents and bad weather. Heavy rain, snow, or rocks can cause a scratch, dent, cracked glass, or other damages without anyone noticing during transport.

Because of these incidences, legitimate auto transport companies will insure your car for damages. Some types of damages may not be covered, so make sure to ask the transport companies about the different types of damages.

A way to avoid damage is to use enclosed transport instead of open air transport. Enclosed transport is more expensive, but it is worth the value because the car will be protected from moving objects on the highway and harsh weather conditions. Enclosed transport is definitely worth considering if the car is a luxury vehicle.

4. Route changes

Sometimes the truck carriers can take a different route because the road is blocked, there are detours, and the weather makes them take a different route.

Because of these unforeseen circumstances, the pricing can also increase because the carrier may have taken a longer route. If the drop-off or pick-up locations are in uncommon areas that are off-route, this may also cause a price increase. In order to avoid this type of problem, picking up your car at a drop-off terminal will decrease delays and extra costs.
